Check and Change the Oil
Check the mower's oil level every time before starting it up, and make sure the oil is always at the right level. Top it up if it's low. Change the oil (and the oil filter if your lawnmower engine has one) every 50 hours or every spring, whichever comes first. -
Sharpen the Blades
Sharp blades are important not only for a nice looking lawn but a healthy lawn as well- tearing the grass will damage it. Check the blade periodically to make sure it's sharp. Always disconnect the spark plug to prevent any chance of the mower starting up when you do anything with the blade. If it needs sharpening you can remove the blade and sharpen it with a file or grinder. Make sure the blade stays balanced-- hang the blade on a nail or something and see if it balances perfectly level. If not, file off more of the heavy side. You can also take the blade to a shop that does blade sharpening- it doesn't cost too much to have it done professionally.
